Why siding waste matters

Ordering siding is not as simple as measuring the walls. Every time you make an angled cut for a gable or notch around a window, you generate scrap that cannot be reused. If you don't account for this, your crew will run short on the last day of the job.

Running to the distributor to buy two more boxes of siding eats into your profit margins and wastes valuable labor hours.

How we calculate it

  • Base Complexity: A simple rectangular ranch might only need a 5% waste factor. A custom home with multiple bump-outs and bay windows requires 15%.
  • Gables: Gables are the biggest source of waste in siding. Because of the roof pitch, you must make continuous angled cuts. We automatically add 50 square feet of waste for every gable on the house.

A typical vinyl siding box contains 2 squares (200 sq ft). Always round your final order up to the nearest full box!

Stop leaving deals on the table.

Calculators help you order materials, but they don't help you sell the job. CurbClose uses AI to visualize exact siding styles and colors on your customer's home instantly.
